Janet Chaplin
Janet Chaplin lives and works in South Wales, painting hills and sea of what she quotes as a “fabulous place”. Her style is semi abstract focusing the majority of the process on colour, textures and contrasts.
I enjoy mixing media and letting the paint drip and interact with each other. Some of the paintings are very time-consuming waiting for the layers to dry before applying another media, another layer. I scratch into the surface to reveal slivers of previous layers. Sometimes I use inks with gesso and oils with varnish. Experimenting with combining media is like alchemy, I never know what might happen.
The seas I have painted in this exhibition are based around the South Wales Coast. Each area has its own subtle colour pallet, for instance the North Pembrokeshire coast has the Prussia blues and Payne’s grey of the slate reflecting in the Turquoise water.
I love capturing the atmosphere of a place and with that the memories and emotions follow.
Painting for me is like a journey. When a painting is going well it is a true joy but when it is a struggle, I have to take stock and let it rest, almost like a petulant child, then the dialogue can begin again.
